When COVID-19 became a mainstream threat and we all had to shut our doors and stay inside, I saw how much this affected a community we have been working closely with over the last 6 months: the local photography community. These small businesses are not considered essential, and had to shut their doors along with a lot of other companies, both big and small.
Unfortunately, I saw how much this affected this creative and unique community of photographers in our area. These are parents and caregivers, some of them are even the breadwinners of their families, and all of the sudden business stopped. I watched with sadness and tears as many of them expressed to me that they didn't know what they were going to do. I was heartbroken.
I was trying to think of a way I could help, what could I do to bring these amazing people, who I now call friends, some positivity and encouragement in a time like this? Enter the "Behind the Lens Project," a series of posts and stories on our Instagram account highlighting not only the businesses they have all worked so hard to create and develop, but the people behind those businesses.
For 12 days we dedicated our social media to our community of local photographers that we have worked with. We shared about their photography, but more importantly about THEM. The people behind the business. Who are they, who do they love, what are their passions?
We learned about the government worker, the polyamorous philanthropist, the traveling Greek, the mom who is fighting cancer, the Korean Dohl photographer, the new photographer, the Coastie wife, the Fillipina immigrant, the Social Worker turned photographer, the bi-lingual foodie, the weightlifting mom, and the veteran... Each and every one of them unique and beautiful in their own way. But one thing that they all have in common, COVID-19 has put a pause on their business and their livelihood.
Each of these women are strong, courageous, and face adversity with grace and strength. I have no doubt they will bounce back from this stronger than before, with more grit and tenacity than before. My hope is that I can be there, cheering them on, along with so many others! We are better together. ❤️
